Goals:
We are committed to living the gospel of
Jesus Christ as it was experienced during and since apostolic times, and
as it has been developed in the Roman Catholic Church following the
Second Vatican Council. Recognizing our commitment to the Gospel, we
will:
Provide quality experiences for the celebration of Eucharistic
Liturgies and sacramental participation;
Encourage people to embrace lives of stewardship and to use their
gifts of time, talent and treasure in service to others;
Foster a respect for life from the moment of conception to the moment
of natural death;
Provide quality religious education and formation for parishioners of
all ages;
Support the spiritual and social needs of singles and one-parent/
two-parent families in the parish;
Recognize and support the richness of our multi-cultural communities
and their spiritual traditions;
To
imitate Jesus’ love for those in need;
Encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life;
Call for greater involvement of everyone, regardless of age, gender or
culture, in the life and leadership roles of the Church;
Encourage parishioners to share the Good News with others, reach out
to inactive Catholics and share the Good News with those outside our
faith community.

BACKGROUND CHECKS:
In a recent letter from Archbishop Alexander Brunett,
he stated, “In the mid-1980’s, we first faced the tragic problem of
sexual abuse in the Archdiocese. At that time, we turned to the
professional community for guidance and counsel as we sought ways to
address these problems in these problems in an open and forthright
manner. In cooperation with our community advisors, Archbishop Raymond
Hunthausen ordered the systematic examination of all personnel files and
asked the State Attorney General’s Office to review them with an eye
toward the safety of our children. The late Archbishop Thomas Murphy
chose the same course of action.”
Beginning July 1, 2001, the Archdiocese of Seattle,
at the direction of Archbishop Brunett, expanded the background checking
requirements for the employees and for those volunteers who work with
children or vulnerable adults. In his letter of December 19, 2000,
Archbishop Brunett referred to this enhanced criminal background check
program to be implemented in Spring, 2001.
We expanded the system of using the Washington State
Patrol criminal Background Check for all employees and for volunteers
who have unsupervised access to children and/or any vulnerable adults
(developmentally disabled, elderly, ill or homebound) in the following
ways:
The criminal background check
includes a check of criminal history not only in Washington but also
in other states if a potential employee or volunteer has lived
outside of Washington any time in the past ten years.
We expanded the criminal check to
include any crimes involving a breach of trust or fiduciary
responsibility for those employees and volunteers who will handle
cash and/or have responsibilities for parish finances including
bookkeeping.
We check the driving records of
those who may drive a car as part of their normal work or volunteer
activity.
The services of an outside company have been engaged to assist the
Archdiocese in this effort. All background checks are processed through
the Human Resources Department of the Archdiocese of Seattle.

SACRAMENTAL
PREPARATION
CATECHUMENATE: "Becoming Catholic"
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a sacramental
formation process that prepares adults for Baptism, Eucharist, and
Confirmation. It includes a total formation that respects each
individual’s experience of conversion. It offers a gentle process that
includes sharing faith together, as well as experiencing faith in the
larger church community and Archdiocese. This gradual formation also
honors those who have been baptized and now want to complete their
sacramental journey.
Members of the Sacred Heart community, already being
fully initiated Catholics, are called by virtue of their Baptism to
welcome and accompany each of the new catechumens and candidates in
their preparation process by becoming a sponsor or through prayer and
example.
If you would like to act as a sponsor in the RCIA
process or if you or someone you know are interested in becoming
Catholic, please call the Parish Office.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN:
Youth in 4th through 12th grades who are seeking entry into the Catholic
faith and/or youth who have been baptized as infants in another
Christian faith and want to celebrate the Sacraments of Eucharist and
Reconciliation .
INFANT BAPTISMS:
Parents seeking to have their child baptized must be registered members
of Sacred Heart. There is a mandatory class held usually on the first
Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M. Baptisms are usually celebrated on the
third Sunday of each month. There are no Baptisms during Lent.
FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST:
Typically the second grade is the time for children to receive the
Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation for the first time. During
second grade, the students focus on these two sacraments with the events
of the Liturgical Year being integrated. Third grade students who have
yet to receive these two sacraments will be integrated with the second
grade sacramental program.
CONFIRMATION:
For High School Confirmation refer to the section on Senior High
Youth Ministry Program. Adult Confirmation classes are offered in the
fall and after the first of the year.
MARRIAGE:
Couples are required to
contact the Parish Office six months in advance of their wedding to
begin church documentation and planning of the ceremony. If there are
previous marriages with either party you must contact the Parish Office
as soon as possible. The Archdiocese of Seattle requires that ALL
COUPLES desiring to be married in the Catholic Church complete some type
of marriage preparation prior to the wedding. This requirement can be
met by either attending an Engaged Encounter Weekend or Evenings for the
Engaged. Although not necessary for the validity of the marriage it is
strongly recommended for Catholics who enter into Sacramental Marriage
to have received the Sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation, and
Eucharist.
Please contact the Parish Office about any of the
above sacramental preparation information.

Sacred Heart. Refer to bulletin for Speakers and events.
RETURNING CATHOLICS:
This program is for baptized Catholics, who, for

is meant to be a place where these Catholics may heal and be restored.
We meet once a week for eight weeks twice a year, and in that time, we
try to reconcile through fellowship, prayer, discussion, and presented
information. This process is sensitive to the needs of the participants,
and provides a safe place in which they can discern and question while
journeying home.

discontinued their ministry in the late 1940’s.

Heart as pastor from 1953 to 1977. He reopened this ministry in the
1950’s, bringing the sacraments and instruction to the Nisquallys in
their homes with the assistance of Chuck McCarthy.
